NYSC plans screening centres for camps

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, on Saturday, said the corps has plans to set up Ebola virus screening centres in orientation camps across the country to fight against the spread of the dreaded disease in camps.

He also said the corps had already taking measures to ensure safety of the corps members and staff of the organisation during orientation programmes.

The NYSC director-general was in Akure, the Ondo State capital, for the inauguration of the NYSC/state governments collaboration on monthly environmental exercise, held at the Democracy Park on Saturday.

According to him, NYSC is determined to ensure that members deployed from various states of the country are free from the deadly virus.

He explained that at the recently concluded orientation camp, the NYSC was involved in many preventive measures, with hand sanitizers provided in the camps where the orientation programmes were held.

Olawumi noted that the organisation had ensured that its clinics in the camps were stocked with drugs, with medical personnel on ground to provide the needed services.

Speaking on the sanitation programme, he said it was part of the move to achieve his vision for the NYSC scheme, which is “to increase the impact of the scheme and expand its value to critical stakeholders.”

He said the programme would enable corps members to render selfless service by helping to maintain a safe and sustainable environment in the country.

Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, on his part, said the collaboration between the organisation and state governments would further enhance healthy society.

The governor, who spoke through his Chief of Staff, Dr. Kola Ademujimi, noted that the state government had been at the vanguard of the campaign for a clean and safe environment.

According to him, this has eventually paid off with the state being adjudged as the cleanest state in the country.

The Commissioner for Environment in the state, Chief Sola Ebiseni, however urged NYSC to increase the participation of the corps members in environmental issues in the state.

He said the people should be involved in tree planting, channelisation and other environment related activities.
