Katy England on collaborating with Kate Moss for Topshop

"She's completely designing it. She's really doing it, and, what's more, she's really good at it." So says uber-art director Katy England of her friend Kate Moss's Topshop collections, firmly putting any detractors back in their respective boxes.

And England should know. The art director and stylist and former right hand woman to Alexander McQueen, has also worked closely with Moss on all her collections for the retail giant.

England, who currently works with Riccardo Tisci on Givenchy menswear and with Tom Ford on his London Fashion Week show, is now turning her attention to film directing with a short film for Vauxhall entitled Made in England.

However, if you were expecting gloss and glamour you're in for a surprise. It deals with the gritty reality of being a teenager today: "being an adolescent and discovering the world for yourself, about how intense and emotional it is, just getting dressed up for a Friday night, when you're a teenager," England said, confiding that she though Vauxhall might have expected "more of a high fashion content."
A particularly personal project, the film is also a statement on the homogenisation of fashion: "I hate the idea that 14 year old girls are made to fell like they have to have their hair a certain way, to have a certain body. It's like there is only one ideal way to look now. It's really harsh."
